NAPALM HEALTH SPA ARCHIVES
Jim Cohn established Napalm Health Spa (NHS), an annual Postbeat poetry magazine, in 1990. He edited and published NHS from 1990-2015. The words "napalm health spa" came from a song by Bob Dylan, "Clean Cut Kid," off his 1985 Empire Burlesque album. The first nine issues of the magazine, 1990-1998, were done as limited editions in hard copy, hand bound, with handmade covers, in runs of 25-50. After Jim founded the online Museum of American Poetics (MAP) in 1998, he decided to incorporate NHS as the site's official poetry magazine. In 1999, NHS went digital. The Napalm Health Spa Archives was soon established to provide free access to back issues. In June of 2011, the original hard copy issues, without covers, were scanned and digitized so that interested readers could see the magazine's entire history. |
The Napalm Health Spa (NHS) Archive is a matter of public historical record. The Archive documents annual issues of NHS as each issue appeared at the Museum of American Poetics (MAP) website during the particular year of its release. As a current issue, corresponding with the year in which publication occurs, each NHS may be subject to changes readily available to online publishing. Once a current issue enters The Archive, its contents and form becomes a literary artifact in order to provide the public access to the record of poets and poetry as it is for the given years of publication. Although digital technology allows for changes to digital archival material, NHS editorial and MAP curatorial policy generally prohibits the making any alterations to MAP archived work. However, authors published in NHS archived issues may contact the editor/publisher regarding a modification of the archive. Proposals are considered on a case by case basis. In the event that any modification to The Archive is made, it is a matter of NHS editorial and MAP curatorial policy to communicate to the public in a manner that balances the need for transparency with the needs of a particular author's case. * On June 29, 2010, the editor/publisher deleted one author and this author's work from the 1998, 1999, and 2000 issues of Napalm Health Spa.
